Caregiving Trends in Georgia

Adults needing care
· One out of every four U.S. households (22.4 million) provides care to a friend or relative over the age of 50.
· According to the Administration on Aging (AoA), 65% of non-institutionalized older adults needing assistance depend solely on family and friends.

Caregivers

· The number of family members/friends available to assume caregiving responsibilities is decreasing leaving less help available to the primary caregiver.

· 9-12 % of caregivers had to leave a job to provide care. Leading to the loss of income, benefits, and social security and retirement contributions.
· 2/3 of working caregivers report increased conflicts and challenges between their paid work and caregiving.

Alzheimer Disease
· One in ten persons over 65 and nearly half of those over 85 have Alzheimer Disease (AD).
· A person with AD will live an average of eight years.
· More than 7 to 10 people with AD live at home.
· Family and friends provide 75% of home care.
